MRdoc2txt

This application batch converts Microsoft Word documents (DOC and DOCX) into text files. This makes it easier for researchers to work with text. Translators can also use this to convert their Word documents into text, which can then be used to build up translation memories using other free software.

This application is distributed as a ZIP file. Before using, uncompress the ZIP file into any folder in your computer. No installation is required.

Then, simply double click on the application file, or run MRdoc2txt on the command line from the directory in which the application file is stored. To use, first choose a source directory where the Word files are located, then choose the target directory to save the text files. Click on "Execute" to start batch conversion. If no target directory is specified, the text files are stored in the same directory as the Word files.

You can also run this tool from the command line using:

MRdoc2txt source_dir <target_dir>

Note that Microsoft Word must be installed in order to convert DOC files. If Microsoft Word is not installed, DOC files will be skipped.

Technical notes:

- This application runs on Python, and uses tkinter for its GUI.
- Packaging for Windows was done using PyInstaller to obtain a one-file executable.
- python-docx is used to process .docx files, while Microsoft Word is called via pywin32's win32com.client to convert .doc files.
